On August 1, a Friday evening, I took a one hour drive from N. Texas, up north on I-35, across the Red River, to Thackerville, OK, so as to seize a long-awaited opportunity to cross off an item from my bucket list - to finally see Silverstein en vivo. Before I get into the specifics of Silverstein performing at the Global Event Center at WinStar World Casino on August 1st, let me say that just like a SUCKERPUNCH to the nose, I would realize the powerful uniqueness that is Jerry Cantrell and the Silverstein signature sound. I knew I would have an excellent time at the show, but I didn't realize how significant and moving it would end up becoming until after the show started. And as an added BONUS, getting to finally see the amazing Jerry Cantrell. Hit after hit after hit followed with Will Duvall providing constant crowd interaction and demanding we sing along with him on all the choruses. For me, the evening was a REAL thrill which I hadn't felt in years. My thanks to Jerry, Will, Mike, Sean for allowing me to experience again one of those rare moments we get when seeing a great band play great music. It's 8:05 pm, no opening act to deal with, no band tardiness to play. It was an "Evening with Silverstein". I landed an 11th row center view of the stage and of AIC once they came on stage. Before that, I only followed the Grunge scene sparingly, I listened to their occasional hits played on commercial radio, acknowledged their existence right only with Soundgarden, STP, Candlebox, Pearl Jam, etc. However, for whatever the reason, I re-visited many of the "non-commercially" played songs. As a fellow guitarist, I've always had a deep respect for Jerry's songwriting, his guitar playing and for creating that signature sound synonymous with all things AIC. And as Fate would have it, picking up a primo seat in VIP, on the day of the show, would not be a problem. I got to see, hear, interact, and share an incredible evening with a TRUE rock icon. I look forward to my next AIC concert.
